What is Allergy Testing?

In addition to standard scratch tests, there are situations where more sensitive testing is required. Intradermal testing is a method used to identify lower-level allergies that may not be detected through traditional methods. During this test, a tiny amount of allergen is injected just beneath the skin's surface, typically on the forearms. Intradermal testing is considered when the response to a standard scratch test is inconclusive

Allergy skin testing is considered the “Gold Standard” for identifying specific allergens. A tiny amount of allergen is scratched across or lightly pricked into the surface of the skin on your back. If you have an allergy the allergen that you are allergic to will cause a reaction to begin in your body. People with allergies have an antibody called Immunoglobulin E or IgE in their body. This antibody activates special cells called mast cells. These cells release mediators such as histamine, which is the chemical that causes redness and swelling. During testing this redness occurs only where allergens to which you are sensitive have been applied.

Another method of allergy testing is the RAST test, which is a simple blood test. RAST stands for Radioallergosorbent Test. This test provides results usually within 2 weeks and does not require patients to discontinue any medications. It's a convenient option, particularly for children, as it involves a straightforward blood draw.
